James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and the Full Moon
‘I quit smoking’, that’s what comes first to my mind looking at Roy Schatt’s image of the young James Dean. But it doesn’t matter after all, coz there will be no picture of an old Mr.Dean. The picture was taken sometimes before the year 1955 James Dean died in a crash driving his Porsche. How can he possibly keep everything in balance, the camera, the cigarette, his body and his subject? Well, that’s probably a rather stupid question, I guess. Since he is not really taking a picture, he’s just posing as a photographer for another photographer. But he looks damn’ cool in this pic for sure, or is it the twin eyed Rolleiflex which makes for the coolness factor?
Marilyn Monroe doesn’t need a cigarette or Rolleiflex to look cool as seen on the picture of her by George Barris. Neither does Arthur Miller on the portrait taken by his wife Inge Morath. Though he might get some image lifting from the stylish Moscot glasses he’s wearing. For the fashionistas these are the retro frames which are just trendy now. I would actually like to go on to talk about some other images of famed people, though the next pictures are not showing people we might know but the full moon and a place in India, the latter an image by Henri Cartier-Bresson and the former, you guessed it, by Ansel Adams.
So what are we talking about here anyway? Well, all these silver-gelatine prints – and many more – have in common that you can buy them on an auction held online and on location at Frankfurt, Germany on May 26th. Expected prices of these prints vary from 600 to 2000 Euros (7-25jt IDR). So good luck with you, if you’re bidding!
