Award winning movie maker Carl Valiquet shares his know-how and experience in Jakarta
Carl Valiquet is an advertising and travel photographer who splits his time between Montreal and Bali. He has produced 3 short films through his production company “Gone Fishing.”
Carl’s third film, “Darah dan Dupa” (Blood and Incense), made in 2008, interlaces images of cockfights and Balinese ceremonies. It is a beautifully composed, visually stimulating, and thought provoking film combining still photography and video that flows from cockfighting to religious ceremonies and prepared offerings. In 2009, the film won the Special Prize for Best Documentary at the Siena Short Film Festival, Italy and the audience choice award as “Best Short Film” at the BALINALE International Film Festival in Indonesia.
Carl is now traveling throughout Indonesia to create images for his new film about “people working physically.” He has been inspired by the great number of people throughout the archipelago who lift or move large loads by the sheer force of their arms or carry heavy objects on their heads.
Carl will screen his award winning film at the Indonesian Heritage Society in Jakarta and tell us about his film making methods and his new project in Indonesia.
