“Traveling in black and white” - the not so common photographs of Benny Asrul
Traveling is a hobby for many people nowadays. Going far and beyond is not any more the privilege of the rich or Buzz Lightyear. And of course taking pictures while sight seeing is a must and very convenient with a modern point and shoot camera. Benny Asrul, an Indonesian, takes another approach to it, his pictures are often black and white. He uses different camera formats and still goes even the analogue way to get his message across:
“We have the options and freedom to take whatever we like, but travel photographs are always about telling a story. A story about the place, the people, the scenery, etc.”
His pictures are not just made for the record of the travel, “Look, I’ve been here and here”. Benny is trying to narrate about his experience and shares the moments and impressions with the readers:
“Travel photograph is about sharing, to let our viewer feel the environment, to feel the weather, to enjoy the scenery or even to let them travel with us on the picture.”
His pictures of Tibet on PD-JKT, which can be seen here, show this.
