Natalie menceritakan bayangannya tentang anak muda, bukan hanya menjunjukkan foto mereka masing-masing.

Natalie is a young German photographer.
She studied at the Folkwang Schule and the images featured here are her diploma or ‘exam’ assignment.
The pictures are portraits of young people, close to her own age:

Paused.

Seven people in seven different rooms. Seven stories, being told by not being told, by only catching a glimpse, captured in the moment of the shot. A pause between the before and after, between inside and outside, an abidance, a flash between what was and what will be, between what the surface shows and what unseeingly lies beneath it. Seven glances, seven pairs of eyes, looking past us at the same thing, at something the picture shows by not showing it.

Natalie tells a story with her images of young people, rather than just showing a picture of each of them. She tries to capture something from inside of these persons and the sequence of similarity in all these ‘pauses’ makes us understand, that there might be moments when we ourselves are in such a pause.
There are other photographer who tell stories about young people, the prominent one coming to mind is probably Lauren Greenfield (VII Agency) and her bestselling photo books Girl Culture, Fast Forward, and Thin. As Greenfield has documented what young people do, how they behave, Natalie’s approach is more ’subtle’, as if she wants to make us see what they feel and think.
But then again, it’s just a photograph, or is it?
